Otalia’s Blissful Radiance Gets “Frankenclipsed”

Otalia

After being thrilled by Otalia’s ability to pass the flirting baton, I felt a cooling off period would be on the horizon for TV’s hottest couple. Since Guiding Light’s Otalia story line is following “old school soap opera,” I am familiar with a decrease in intensity before it ramps back up again. As I have stated before, the Otalia story line is riding a roller coaster. There are climbs up the track and dips down the track, and you cannot always stay inside a vertical loop. You have to ride on level track for a bit. Keeping that I mind, I felt the week of May 25 for Otalia could be summed up as one word: a “frankenclipse.”

Frankenclipse – the eclipsing and/or interruption of Otalia’s happy and private moments, usually by Frank Cooper; however, this term can be applied to any Guiding Light character that dims Otalia’s light.

Heavenly Bodies

The May 27 episode kicked off with Olivia and Natalia taking care of Beacon business with Greg, the Banquet Manager. I wondered if Greg picked up on the undercurrents between Olivia and Natalia based on an “oooohh kay” look he gave them in the May 20 episode. Obviously, Natalia was wondering the same thing when she noticed the way he was looking at her and Olivia. When I watched this scene, I thought Greg would make some sly comment about how he knew what was going on between Olivia and Natalia. Instead, he threw me into a bit of a laughing loop when he asked about Olivia’s shoes and complimented them. I concurred with Olivia’s flashy, “Oh!” response to Greg because he made me a fan afterwards. Guiding Light, Greg might be your version of As the World Turns’ Henry Coleman. Keep him because he is fantastic (and not just because he admired Olivia’s shoes).

As Olivia and Natalia left the Beacon, I loved their contagious smiles and joined in on their humor as they discussed Greg’s fetish for shoes. When I watched this scene, it reminded me of the amazing comfort level that Otalia established the week of May 18. While Olivia and Natalia have been friends for many months, I never saw this level of “girlfriend talk” between them before. It started in the May 20 episode when Natalia complimented Olivia’s hairstyle, and it continued this week as they laughed about Greg’s fetish. It is wonderful to see this new aspect of their relationship as they continue to evolve together. Strangely enough, I feel Otalia’s newfound girlfriend mode is a direct effect of their romantic feelings. I would have expected to see this kind of talk between them months ago. Of course, they were too busy suffering through angst and battling their resistance at loving each other, which I loved.

When Natalia told Olivia she felt Greg was going to say something about them, her words revealed her self-consciousness. While Natalia has come a long way in being comfortable with Olivia, she is still ill at ease about the newness of their relationship around others. After all, they have not come out as a couple – even though many think they already are after the My Two Mommies presentation. Because much of Springfield already thinks they are together, I agree with Olivia’s assessment on how they interact. They should not care what the Beacon staff thinks…to a point. Olivia just needs to maintain some sort of business decorum (even though she fails often) with Natalia. This would avoid any charges of nepotism, which is why I’m glad Natalia asked Olivia to treat her like any staff member in the May 20 episode. I’ll grant you that Olivia and Natalia were standing very close to each other while talking with Greg. Nonetheless, they did not give anything away (this week) about their romantic relationship. I viewed their body language as 95% “strictly business” and 5% “I can’t stay away from the force of your gravitational pull.” As I watched the May 27 and May 28 episodes, that gravitational pull percentage would climb with these heavenly bodies.

Watching Olivia and Natalia talk outside of the Beacon made me realized something interesting about their shoe discussion. I noticed there was some double entendre in their statements. Natalia told Olivia she would like to borrow the shoes that watered Greg’s foot fetish appetite. Olivia’s reply to her was that her shoes were boats and that Natalia would drown in them. When I analyzed this conversion, I saw their statements in these ways:

Natalia: “They’re so cute and I need to borrow them.”

It seems like Natalia was referencing a statement she made from the May 20 episode. I’m referring to when Natalia and Olivia were in the park (prior to the infamous bench scoot scene). She told Olivia that she wished she could be more like her because she is afraid of everything. I felt she was once again talking about borrowing some of Olivia’s strength in addition to her courage and “no fear” attitude. Natalia has strength and courage, but she needs to have more faith in it, which I do continue to see. At this point of the story line, I think Natalia needs more of Olivia’s “I don’t care what people think” attitude when it comes to others’ perceptions. It would not surprise me if this were the next phase of evolution in Natalia’s character.

Olivia: “Are you kidding? They’re boats, and you’d drown in them.”

I felt Olivia was telling Natalia that she would not want to walk a yard in shoes, much less a mile. Based on the research I have conducted for the Olivia character, she has had a hard knock life. Olivia has dealt with teenage rape, attempted murder (of her daughter Ava), attempted suicide (see Lover of Tosca episodes), multiple failed marriages/relationships, and of course, a failing heart that nearly killed her. I think there are many things Natalia does not know about Olivia (i.e. the rape and suicide) yet. As a result, I felt Olivia’s statement was referencing some of her history, which remains hidden from Natalia. Considering everything, I really think Olivia believes Natalia has the strength and faith to walk in her shoes without drowning. However, I feel Olivia would never want her to because she loves her so much. People in love protect the ones they love from any unnecessary pain. The February 4, 2009 episode is a perfect example of Olivia’s protective shield when anyone dared to mess with Natalia.

As they parted ways at the Beacon, I definitely noticed Olivia’s reserved emotions when Natalia gushed about Rafe coming home. When Natalia commented on Olivia’s aloof emotions, I knew where her reservations were coming from. I can see that the reality of Olivia’s fears about Rafe’s reaction is settling in. Olivia has had little time to relish in being romantically involved with Natalia. I believe she is afraid and unsure how the sands of the hourglass are sifting through the tube – faster rather than slower with Natalia (or vice versa). Nonetheless, I believe Olivia is happy for Natalia and happy about Rafe coming home. Although I have not seen Olivia interact much with Rafe, I think she definitely cares about him. I do not think it’s only because he’s Natalia’s son either. I remember how Olivia cut a conference call short to take Rafe his medication in prison. I also remember how Olivia stood toe-to-toe with the prison warden when Rafe was getting beat up by other inmates. Yes, she did those things out of her hidden love for Natalia, but she also did it because she cared about Rafe’s welfare.

Even when Natalia assured Olivia they could still be together, I spotted more of Olivia’s newfound shaky confidence in her ability to keep the prize – true love. She still does not believe within every fiber of her being that she will have Natalia for the long run. Again, she wants to believe, but if Rafe has a negative reaction, it would likely end what they have. I felt it was fitting for Olivia to question when Natalia will come out to Rafe. I think Olivia wants to know sooner rather than later if they could endure – even though she is hopelessly “purple whipped.” I felt Natalia was asking Olivia to “walk in her shoes” and have faith in Rafe as well. Even if he reacts badly, I think Rafe would eventually accept them because he would see that Olivia makes Natalia’s life complete.

Meteor Impacts

Olivia’s celebration surprise for Natalia and Rafe led her into a collision course with two Cooper-sized meteors – Frank and Buzz. At Company, Olivia’s care and consideration in ordering Rafe’s favorites brought back memories. She did the same thing for Natalia several months ago and planned a surprise date (for Natalia) with Frank. This time around, she had to deal with Buzz’s resistance at having the celebration at Company. I understand Buzz wanting to protect his son, but Frank could always make himself scarce (God, I wish) if he’s that heartbroken. I had a moment where I felt Buzz was about to refuse Olivia’s business (in this economy?). Of course, Frank walked in and gave Buzz the go ahead…but only because of Rafe (so he says).

In some ways, I am glad to see that Frank is not as bitter towards Olivia. Nevertheless, the other part of me wanted Frank to be a bit meaner with Olivia. When I think with the logical side of my brain, it would make sense to me. Olivia has destroyed two of Frank’s relationships – the one with him by sleeping with Buzz and now, Natalia. I don’t know about anyone else, but this would make me pretty upset if I were in Frank’s shoes. On the other hand, I know how I feel when Frank tries to paint Olivia with an old paintbrush. The emotional part of my brain works itself up to a point where I detest Frank Cooper. Again, that is because I am supposed to react this way. Against enormous odds, Olivia is a heroine now. As viewers, we always root for, defend, and rise up (with pitchforks) when it comes to protecting the heroine. Even though Olivia can defend herself, it doesn’t stop me (as a viewer) for wanting to defend her honor. Additionally, with everything going on right now, I don’t know if I can tolerate skirmishes between Frank and Olivia.

Countdown to a Frankenclipse

At the courthouse, Natalia and Rafe shared a mother and son moment before the hearing. I watched Natalia be her normal, nurturing self towards her son. I then watched as Rafe reacted to Natalia’s mothering – by whipping out his scissors (his tongue) and taking a snip at the umbilical cord. I think that his slightly, smart-mouthed response was a way of letting Natalia know he is a man now. Nevertheless, I felt Rafe should be a bit more sensitive towards Natalia, which he must have realized by saying he missed her “nagging.” I felt Natalia realized she might have overstepped when she told Rafe about the plans she’d made for his re-entry into society. I saw this as Natalia just being herself and trying to help someone she loved. On the other hand, I could also see how Rafe would interpret her planning. As a man, he would want to make his own plans for his life on the outside and rely on help if he needed it.

When Rafe’s hearing began and the judge started speaking, my face lit up into a smile before I chuckled. I caught a “writing Easter egg” that Jill Lorie Hurst probably dropped in on purpose. That Easter egg was the name of Rafe’s attorney – Mrs. Hurst. As a writer, I recognize that other writers use names of people they know in real life for characters; I know I have. Obviously, Jill Lorie Hurst used her own name for Rafe’s attorney. You were sneaky but I caught it, Jill Lorie Hurst; I liked it.

After Mrs. Hurst provided her argument for Rafe’s release, it was Natalia’s opportunity to speak. As she described the environment Rafe would return to, Olivia arrived just in time. I noticed how Natalia turned to glance at Olivia and give her a slight smile; I saw the lift of her cheeks. When Natalia told the judge she could give Rafe a wonderful family built on love and respect, I noticed the quick glance she shot in Olivia’s direction. For me, this was another indicator that Olivia is definitely a part of that family environment. Words are one thing, but actions are another. Natalia’s body language gave me all the assurances I needed to see.

When the judge mentioned a problem involving Natalia, I could see the alarm in her facial expression, which Olivia quickly echoed. I felt they were both thinking about Emma’s My Two Mommies presentation and wondering if Doris’ publicity stunt from February had colored his judgment. The judge did not give me any indication that he knew about the presentation or if it gave him a bias. Nonetheless, I had a bit of an issue with the judge saying Rafe needed a strong male presence and male mentor. I understand that fathers and father figures are important. Every child, boy or girl, could benefit with a father figure in his or her lives, but it does not mean a child fails in life without one. The same can be said for children without a mother figure. If Natalia wasn’t sufficient enough of a role model, I felt Olivia could fit the bill at this point in her life. Of course, I realize I’m living in a fantasy world with this scenario, but she would tick all of the checkboxes on my list right now. I’m just playing devil’s advocate, but wouldn’t any mentor (male or female) suffice? Since I’m watching a soap, I realized I would be heading down “Cooper Street” the moment the judge expressed concerns about Natalia’s personal life.

It was no surprise that Frank went to the “appliance store” (aka the courthouse) and volunteered to be a mentor, thus resulting in Rafe’s release. Part of me was frustrated that Frank is still in Otalia’s orbit, but the other part of me was happy he was helping Rafe go home earlier. Yes, Frank makes me a bit insane, but I do get that he is a good guy (as long he doesn’t try to mess with Rafe’s head about Olivia). While I watched Natalia express her gratitude towards Frank, I noticed that Olivia was left out of the charmed circle in the courtroom. She was definitely holding back, as was Natalia, in their initial celebration. I watched as Natalia turned to smile at Olivia and felt she wanted Olivia to be with them. I understand why Olivia was trying to be more reserved. She was probably afraid of exposing herself to Rafe by being too demonstrative. Therefore, out of respect for Natalia’s wishes, Olivia contained herself…but not for long. I think Olivia was relieved to give Natalia a happy yet friendly hug. The hug might have been friendly, but Natalia and Olivia’s eye communication expressed their love as well.

I realize at one point (late 2008) Olivia thought Natalia only cared about Gus’ heart and not her. I felt differently when I watched Natalia fight so hard for Olivia to take care of herself and live when her heart started rejecting. Over time, Olivia knew that Natalia cared about her, too. Nonetheless, I felt they were both sensitive about Gus’ heart but in different ways in the past. I continue to be relieved that they have gotten over that sensitivity. Olivia was able to express that she was glad Gus’ heart could be there for Rafe’s hearing. Several months ago (2008), Olivia would not have said such a thing. I was most happy by Natalia saying she was glad Olivia was there for Rafe. Without Gus’ heart, Olivia would not be alive today; however, I felt Natalia was letting Olivia know that she matters more than Gus’ heart at this point.

3 Seconds & Counting to a Frankenclipse

When Olivia revealed her surprise, welcome home celebration, I could see that Natalia was happy about the idea. Unfortunately, Rafe was not interested in celebrating. I could understand him wanting a quiet first night at home, as could Olivia. I did not see any disappointment in Olivia’s reaction, just simple understanding. However, I was able to pinpoint something else coming from Olivia – more of that love and yearning towards Natalia.

As Natalia left with Rafe, I saw that all too familiar smoldering glare that Olivia directs in Natalia’s direction. I felt that Olivia did not want to let Natalia go when she released her hand, and I could swear Olivia was checking out Natalia from behind. I saw how Olivia’s gaze roamed hungrily yet lovingly over Natalia. I’ve said it once before, and I’ll say it again…Olivia is so “purple whipped” by Natalia. She has a hard time struggling with her natural urges (not just the sexual ones) towards Natalia at times. I felt that watching Olivia bottling those urges for appearances was painful, especially after the blissful touches from the May 20 episode. I think it explains the reserved mask she attempted to wear on the May 27 and May 28 episodes.

2 Seconds & Counting to a Frankenclipse

Back at the farmhouse, Rafe was snipping more of the umbilical cord with Natalia and ticking me off in the process. I do not understand how having a mother who is willing to prepare something other than prison food makes her worse than a warden. I never see Olivia, Emma, or the Coopers turning down Natalia’s food. All I know is that Rafe’s attitude towards Natalia is disheartening. He needed her support when he was in prison, but now that he’s out, he doesn’t want it. I watched how Natalia has done nothing but fight to get him released, nearly working herself to death in the process to make it happen. Rafe should definitely display a lot more gratitude and understanding. While he’s adjusting to life in the real world again, he should be relishing in Natalia’s need to spoil him right now. He had to go without it for all this time, after all.

1 Second & Counting to a Frankenclipse

When Olivia and Emma visited the farmhouse, I was relieved to see that Rafe was seemingly happy to see Emma. Even though his response was normal, Natalia could not hide her worried expression from Olivia. As Natalia explained that Rafe was adjusting, I agreed with Olivia’s suggestion to surround him with more family. If there is one thing I know, it’s that inmates miss their family in a way I could never understand. They need a family support system inside of prison (through letters and visits) as well as outside once released. I can speak from personal experience on this matter. I have a friend who went through this when their loved one was released from prison. One of the main keys to helping them adjust was keeping a positive, extended family and friend support system within reach. Of course, I could also see that Olivia was trying to get Natalia to address their relationship with Rafe head on. Once more, Olivia is dealing with shaky confidence when it comes to her relationship with Natalia. I think Olivia would feel a bit more secure, assuming Rafe handles the news in a supportive way. I also think Olivia is tired of having to hold back her displays of affection whenever she and Natalia are around their children. I noticed how the “I can’t stay away from the force of your gravitational pull” effect got the best of them when they were speaking alone outside.

Olivia explained she was not angling to move back in by providing Rafe with more family. I genuinely think she wants to help yet establish a course towards becoming a blended family. I knew that Natalia wanted the same based on past discussions with Olivia. Natalia was willing to take two steps forward – complete with more smoldering Otalia gazes – by agreeing to tell Rafe and Emma. Just when the “I can’t stay away from the force of your gravitational pull” effect reeled them in so close they were touching each other, the “frankenclipsed” occurred.

Total Frankenclipse of Otalia

I knew that Emma’s cry for Olivia was not a good sign. When Emma told Olivia that Rafe snapped at her, Natalia cut him a look that children know all too well. Her motherly and reproachful “what did you do?” glare was classic! Once again, Jessica Leccia made me sit up and take notice by pulling me in with that fierce look. It was fantastic and executed perfectly. I smiled because I have been on the receiving end of “that look” from my mom more than you could imagine.

After Rafe stormed away, Natalia went into mother mode with Emma rather than running after her son. Personally, I don’t blame her. Not only did Rafe “frankenclipse” Otalia’s moment, but his attitude is just unacceptable to me at this point. He should be happy and thankful for so many blessings in his life, yet he’s snapping at the people who have done nothing but love and support him. I know people have different ways of dealing with things, but Rafe should be pulling in the people who love him right now rather than pushing them away. He’s been in an isolated prison environment long enough. He needs to get his mind out of its isolation cell and re-join the general population.

Of course, I knew Rafe’s behavior was going to undo the decision Olivia and Natalia made about coming out to their children. I felt Olivia was making the first move in this direction by saying there is a time to hold on tight and let go. Despite Olivia’s words, I noticed they were being affected by that gravitational pull again through their eyes. I was being pulled in right along with them…until Frank brought on another “frankenclipse.”

I understood why Frank was at Natalia’s house, unlike many of the other times where he showed up like a bad penny. Even though his presence “frankenclipsed” Otalia, he wasn’t nearly as bad as Rafe. In fact, I was happy to see Frank pull himself and Rafe away for some mentoring time, which left me with more Otalia time.

My suspicions about Natalia still wearing her “two steps back, one step forward” shoes were correct. When she told Olivia she would like to hold off on telling Rafe and Emma, I sighed. I can see Natalia and Olivia’s points of view on this matter. Rafe needs more family support, yet he is snapping at some of those family members. I’m not upset at Natalia for wanting to wait right now, but I wonder how this will impact her relationship with Olivia in the future if she waits too long. Olivia clearly wants to be out and in the open when it comes to loving Natalia and showing displays of affection. Natalia is comfortable with the affection but is concerned with people’s perceptions. Do I think this issue will come to a head one day? Yes. If things continue down the same path, at some point, Olivia and Natalia will come to a crossroad. Do I think that crossroad could involve a breakup? I can see it as a possibility, but I feel it would be a temporary breakup for Otalia, not permanent. As this story unfolds, I am beginning to have faith that the heavenly bodies known as Olivia and Natalia will coexist in the same galaxy…forever.

I would like to say to the Guiding Light that I continue to notice the color coordination between Olivia and Natalia’s wardrobe. Again, I am noticing that (mostly dark) blue is the “in color” for these characters in addition to certain accessories:

  • Olivia continues to sport her dark blue jacket from the May 22 episode on the May 27 and May 28 episodes.
  • Natalia wore a dark blue scarf on the May 27 episode to coordinate with Olivia’s dark blue jacket.
  • Both Natalia and Olivia wore scarves on the May 22 episode as they talked outside of the Beacon.
  • Natalia’s blue wardrobe on the May 28 episode was a throwback to her clothing at the spa (May 11 episode).

I would like give a round of applause to the Guiding Light crew. They continue to utilize interesting camera shots that make me pay attention. My favorite shot of the week was how the camera filmed Olivia and Natalia from behind on the opening Otalia scene for May 27. It was very cool how Guiding Light filmed my favorite new supporting character, Greg, between my other two favorite two characters. I don’t recall ever seeing a camera shot like that on a soap opera before. Once again, Guiding Light made me take notice that they are not just a soap opera anymore. They are something different, something beautiful…something artistic. If I had one tiny grievance, it was the sound issue on the May 27 episode. While Olivia and Natalia were talking, the airplane flying overhead made it a bit difficult to hear them, and I had to pay closer attention than normal. I realize this is one of the hazards of using the new production model (which continues to endear me every day). Otherwise, it was another solid effort for daytime’s hardest working soap opera. Thank you for bringing art to my screen five days a week.

Coming Soon: The Otalia Jessica Leccia Edition

As many of you are aware, I am in the process of working on the Otalia Jessica Leccia Edition blog post. For an update on this worthy effort and labor of love, please click here and read the latest update.

Additionally, I am working on something related to the six new Otalia terms I’ve coined for the month of May. These terms are purple blocking, purple whipped, purple pain, purple vision, purple zzzs, and frankenclipse. I have requested that all five terms (other than frankenclipse, which was just coined) be added to the Big Purple Dreams dictionary. There will be more on this initiative soon.

Note: If you comment and choose to leave a spoiler, please identify it in advance with the word “spoiler,” or even separate it out to alert me that a spoiler is coming. I read everyone’s comments, but if I see the word “spoiler,” I stop reading at that point. Again, I have my process to make the magic happen with these Otalia posts. Thanks everyone for your continued love and support!

Wow! I love your analysis of the shoe comments. I remember when hearing them that there was some significance behind what they were saying..however, this tired brain could not connect the dots. Thanks for doing that for me!

Once again an amazing and well thought analysis of a week in the life of our favorite couple!

    Get some well-deserved rest!

    Until next time…

Thank you for such a wonderful analysis of a week in the life of Otalia. Reading this keeps me out of spec places elsewhere. I like your optimism that they will coexist in the same galaxy forever! See you next week!

I enjoy the way you examine and report on the Otalia episodes.

I’m still not convinced that Rafe’s behavior is atypical for a 19-20 year old. My 19 year old nephew has a similar push-pull attitude with his family and he didn’t even go to prison, just went away to college this past year. It wasn’t so jarring because my brother and sister-in-law had direct contact with him during holidays and parent events at the school; unlike Natalia who was limited in her interactions with Rafe. Also, it’s only been maybe 24-48 hrs since he was released; I would think it takes a bit longer than that to adjust and for reality to sink in that he’s free & no longer alone. Natalia is the one who needs to adjust her way of thinking and relating to Rafe more than vice versa. I did like it when Rafe said he wasn’t ready to deal with family and he was referring to Emma and I’m hoping, by extension, Olivia.

This is another great analysis of this week’s Otalia…Franenclipse – love that term!

My husband and I agree with you 100% about Greg. He is just fabulous and would be a great comedic foil for the gals. He reminds me a lot of Jack from Will & Grace.

The analysis of the shoes was very interesting…I wonder when Olivia will tell Natalia about the rape and suicide…

My husband and I noticed in the 5/27 episode there is a suble change in the relationship between Olivia and Frank. Even though Frank is still curt with Olivia, he seems to be starting to accept Olivia and Natalia together for two reasons: 1) Ever since Frank found them in the park, he has asked Olivia to stay when he talks to Natalia about Rafe; 2) When he finally admits to Olivia at the end of 5/27 episode that he’s not the only one who loves Natalia very much. Dave and I both believe that Frank is going to be one of Otalia’s biggest supporters and advocates. We did like his interaction with Rafe and he doesn’t overstay his welcome when he does have to interrupt the women.

Emma and Rafe do act very much like siblings from the moment she greeted him at the Farmhouse to their spat. I for one am looking forward to the day when the four of them can truly act like a family.

Spot on and wonderful. Again, I love your insight to Otalia. You always bring a fresh perspective to the story. I love the “shoe” interpretation.

I agree we are on a roller coaster ride and temporary breakups are expected with any couple on soap. The solace is that the lowest lows with have their opposite in the highest highs. So stick with it and not despair, as with any soap couple they will have to endure hardships in order to strengthen their relationship.

As for Rafe. You hit it on the nose about him sawing at the umbilical code. I think it is normal for a young main (over 18 right?) to have an emotional break with his parents and begin to forge his own identity. I felt that Natalia was nurturing, but her nurturing was for a much more immature Rafe.

I interpreted that Rafe is ready to move on with his own life. (Personally, I thought the whole , mentor issue was kinda bogus, I mean he is not a juvenile). I could see Natalia was not ready for Rafe to begin to emotionally distance himself from her.

I feel Rafe had to do some fast maturing in prison, a side that we were not privy to except that he was getting beat up. (Maybe this “beating up” could also be seen as an allegory for a fast maturity brought on by “hard knocks” that life can give you). I think Rafe had to grow up fast and fend for himself. He is no longer use to Natalia doing this for him.

Yes, he should be grateful and respectful, with this I am in full agreement. But it is reality that many children are neither grateful nor respectful with all the hard work parents have done in their behalf. Unfortunately, many feel resentful, mostly due to what they perceive as parents treating them as if they are still children and not young adults.

Again, brava and encore. I do enjoy your weekly blogs and look forward with great anticipation of your next one.

THIS. The perfect ending to an otherwise dreary day. Curled up with my Chai-Latte and a write up that made me revisit the clips with new eyes coupled with your insight.

I for one… am anxiously waiting for that “temporary” break up of Otalia. The subtle pain being exuded by Olivia [yearning gazes, whispered prose/pleas] it’s coming to a head. While the character really needs a break, this Rafe ordeal is a great “coming to Jeebus” plot device.

Natalia needs to pony up. Can’t wait for that!

I cannot wait for your next blog!

Well it took me a long time 2 read it but I finally got done. Got caught up n watching the game, sorry.
Anyways, u did another great post. “Frankenclipse” is so original, I never seen that 1 coming. But I do agree with u that Frank has a very good reason 2 be mad @ Olivia but I c him easing up on her b/c they both love Natalia so much. Dimples keeps doing the 2 step n the opposite direction. I was ready 2 put on a special mix 4 Otalia this week but then things changed.
Rafe is going 2 b the biggest obstacle & I can c them breaking up 4 a short time & it hurting Olivia. She then starts her self-destructive mode trying 2 any & everything 2 hurt Natalia. Hopefully, Natalia will have the strong presence 2 tell Olivia that’s enough & I’m going 2 fight 4 u no matter what. Rafe needs that same pep talk from Doris that she gave 2 Frank. If u want 2 b treated like a man, start acting a man & man up.
The one thing that I hate is that I always miss the color schemes until u point them out & my memory take over, b/c ur right. I thought I usually catch everything but u being the great writer u r, u catch everything. I’m proud of all ur writing b/c it captures everything that needs 2 b said & written in a review of a great show like Guiding Light.
I know u will continue 2 do a great job n the future, can’t wait 4 Dimples post. Take the week off & enjoy urself. No pressure 4 next week. I will continue 2 champion ur terms 4 the Big Purple Dictionary.

  8. Flo Says:

Thanx a lot for your post.
Once again your comments are insightful, and I really appreciate your writing.

Your “shoe” interpretation gave me a clue I totally missed watching the scene, and even after. I have to say my personal analysis of it was more “salacious”(so I’ve been told) as I pointed out on You Tube that the shoe sexually symbolizes vagina (Yeah, I know, it’s pathetic, I’m that far gone with Otalia). I guess the sexual tension between our two head-over-heels-in-love characters is starting to rub off on me… but who could blame me, really?
You are right about the unforgivable attitude of Rafe. The guy obviously hasn’t suffered enough to compare his mother to his warden. Am I wrong or he “escaped” the cruelty of “real” prison thanks to Olivia’s intervention (with the governor).? I don’t remember him thanking her for that, btw.
Personaly, I’ve been deeply touched by Natalia’s reactions as a mother. She understands Rafe is not a kid anymore. It hurts her, he upsets her (I loved the upset conversation with Natalia about him “adjusting”) but I’m sure she won’t try to keep him “locked” possessively and I love that about Natalia.

I can’t wait to read your Otalia Jessica Leccia Edition…

Oh my gawd!, you are so tuned in to these characters, There are many details in these epis that you mention, that I have not fully seen. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but I swear, your words paint a really detailed, sensual, emotional, colorful description that is hard to beat. Please keep painting! Love your work! Rest now.

I was so eager to read your weekly analysis that I came here at six this morning before the link was posted at BPD. To iterate, the best part of my weekend. Again, thank you for your effort, your dedication, and sharing your gift.

Great post. I love your interpretation and the deep dive into the show and the characters. I see most of what you do, but you always bring up a gem here and there that I have overlooked. It’s like seeing it all over again new.

Rafe does need a time of adjustment. IMO tho, just tell him, make that part of his adjustment, he is an adult. The sooner you tell him, the sooner he’ll get over it. Olivia is a big part of Nat’s life, he knows that, hence his “not ready for family” comment. So let’s get the show on the road. Family is family, they don’t go away just cause you are maladjusting… just sayin…

I too love the camera work. I’ve got a lot of friends who make fun of the low budget feel, but it works. Every now and then you get a great artistic shot that makes you go – that was good!!!

BTW, that ball catching scene was great. And while I appreciated the ‘butt shot’ I also appreciated the beauty of it. Aside from the obvious.

I also know that a house with property like that in Peapack NJ most likely goes for a million dollars or more, I am sure Nat can’t afford it!!! Makes me laugh when I forget that this is a soap.

Thanks again, your thoughts are great!

Yet another excellent posting. I enjoyed the shoe analysis – that was so bang on!

I also love the title – Frankenclipse. LOL!

Thank you for the time, love and effort you put into these postings!

    Skeeterbop,

Why, thank you so very much for the lovely compliment! Regarding the shoe dialog, always happy to, um…”tie the shoelaces” for you.

As for rest, believe me, I got plenty of it: 15 hours. I love catching “purple zzzs” after a week of “purple pain.” Heh, heh ;)

  14. writetilt Says:

    ahhiker,

You are very welcome! I’m glad you could see (via my replies to you on Twitter) that this week’s Otalia post was worth the wait. It killed me trying to get it finished towards the end. I powered through a cold/sore throat, sleep deprivation (make that “purple pain”), and interruptions that made me want to beat my head against the wall. As usual, I think I could do better with this Otalia post, but I am pretty much happy with the end result.

Yes, I do believe Otalia is on course to last now, no matter the obstacles. What I’ve seen the past few weeks has eased my anxiety (in the past) about them making it.

  15. writetilt Says:

    Kiericat,

Thank you. I’m glad you enjoy my analysis of Otalia episodes. Sometimes it can be a bit agonizing to do if I feel like I have to “baby step” myself through footage and write before repeating all over again. While those moments give me a bit of angst, in the end, it’s worth the effort. I want the Otalia posts to be right.

Regarding Rafe’s behavior, I agree that it’s normal for him to go through the “umbilical cord cutting” process with Natalia. However, I’m looking at his behavior differently because he was in prison, which adds a different layer. Again, I’m basing my assessments from personal experiences of knowing a friend who had a loved one in prison. Actually, make that two people. They were so grateful to be home and be around their family upon initial release. They enjoyed being spoiled and having attention dumped on them by their family. I agree that everyone responds differently, but from my personal experiences, this is how those individuals responded.

I agree the adjustment period is going to take a long time. In real life, it can take months to adjust. Some ex-cons can be afraid to go beyond the perimeter of their house for weeks. They can also get a bit nervous whenever it seems like the police is following them in a car. I do know for a fact that when ex-cons get out of prison, they love to eat a home cooked meal…lots and lots of them. That’s why it struck me a bit odd that Rafe would turn down Natalia’s offer of food. Granted it was toast, but it’s still not prison food.

Yes, I think that Natalia needs to adjust her way of thinking but due to the cord cutting Rafe is doing. Even though I didn’t write that in this post (ended up on cutting room floor when editing/revising), she is seeing that he’s come home a “man” now. However, I still think Rafe’s behavior towards her is not what I expected mostly because he was in prison. I feel while he shut cut the cord from Natalia, he should be a bit more gentle about doing so.

  16. writetilt Says:

    DocT,

Why, thank you very much! LOL. I figured a few people would get a kick out of “frankenclipse.” That new Otalia term popped into my head while I was driving to work Friday morning. I knew I had to use it some way in the post and the title. Sometimes it surprises me that I’m able to come with these new Otalia terms the way I do. They just come out nowhere sometimes :)

Although I didn’t write it in this post, I also noticed that Frank seems to realize that Olivia loves Natalia. I saw the way he looked at them at the courthouse when Olivia and Natalia were hugging. I think he sees that Olivia isn’t just being Olivia by going for Natalia.

Agreed that Emma and Rafe are like siblings. That’s already a great first step for Otalia to become a true, blended family.

  17. writetilt Says:

    Silverbutterfly50,

Thank you very much for the compliments. I try :)

I have backed away from “the ledge” when it comes to Otalia now. Based on the last few weeks, Otalia is here to stay at this point. Even if they break up (happens to every super couple), they will reunite. So, I’m definitely sticking with this story line. I can’t miss a single second of Otalia.

I agree that he isn’t use to Natalia doing stuff for him anymore and that he came out of prison a man. This is just me, but I’m basing how I felt and what I wrote about Rafe from personal experiences of people who have gone through post-prison adjustment. From what I know and saw for myself, these individuals reacted with gratitude and allowed their families to spoil them a bit without sniping like Rafe has done. Of course, people are different in their reactions, but I expected Rafe to react that way rather than the way he’s been doing.

I absolutely think he should cut the cord with Natalia, but I think also needs to be a bit more sensitive in how he does it. Natalia just got him home, and she just wants to spoil him with her nurturing love. I just think they should find a happy balance between cord cutting and allowing Natalia to be her loving self towards her kids (which of course includes Emma). True, many kids are not grateful, but after everything Natalia did for him while he was in prison, he should be…simple because he was in prison and she was supporting him 150%. If Natalia hadn’t been behind him the way he has, then I could see him reacting this way. But again, that’s my interpretation of the Rafe situation :)

  18. writetilt Says:

    Jubean,

I think it’s awesome that you found my Otalia post a perfect ending to a dreary day! I feel that way when I read a good book. Thank you.

If/when the temporary breakup occurs, I see Natalia being the one fighting to get Olivia back. That’s how I would write it :)

  19. writetilt Says:

    Toya,

Heh, heh. I bet you didn’t see “frankenclipse” coming. I know that all of my new Otalia terms have had “purple” associated with it thus far. I guess my brain was really firing on all cylinders Friday morning on the way to work.

Right now, Rafe could be that big obstacle for Otalia. We shall see.

Regarding the color schemes *shrugs* I just pay attention to this show and Otalia in particular very closely. That’s one of the benefits (sometimes a curse) of having a detailed-oriented and analytical brain. I notice this stuff in everything I watch (TV/film), but I am very tuned into what I see with Otalia in a different way. I don’t always write about the color schemes every week, but I notice them every time and the scenic landscapes that makes Otalia so beautiful on screen.

Thanks for the compliments about my writing. I still have my days where I wonder if I will “fail” this week on an Otalia post. I’m not use to writing weekly pieces like this. While I have been blogging on the net since 2003 (had another site before this one), I never wrote so consistently about a subject like Otalia before. Not only do I have my own expectations for Otalia, but I’m aware that my readers have high expectations as well. Of course, my expectations are always higher because I’m a perfectionist (which can be a curse sometimes).

  20. writetilt Says:

    Flo,

You are welcome. I’m appreciative that you enjoy my Otalia posts. Writing these posts are mentally and physically exhausting, but I absolutely enjoy writing about Otalia every week.

Ha! I guess the shoe interpretation could be viewed that way. That’s funny :D

No, Rafe has never thanked Olivia about what she did. I just re-watched all of the Otalia archives on the Otaliafan channel, so I know for a fact that I haven’t seen it. I don’t remember seeing a scene where Rafe was told what Olivia did for him. Maybe Jill Lorie Hurst is saving that bit of news later, assuming Rafe reacts badly to Otalia as a couple.

I, too, have been touched by Natalia’s mothering of Emma and Rafe. She really is a freakin’ superhero in my book.

LOL. The Otalia Jessica Leccia Edition is my greatest challenge right now. I have some days where I’m “freaking out” on how I can do that post and Jessica Leccia justice. As usual, I will just try my best :)

  21. writetilt Says:

    Debbie,

Wow, thank you so much for the awesome compliments! You humble me with those words. Really.

LOL. I feel like I do have a special antenna when it comes to the characters involved in the Otalia story line. The only character that I have a long history with is Frank Cooper. I remember watching him on GL before I quit the show in 1993. I was aware of Olivia Spencer based on some stuff my brothers told me in the past when they were watching GL. I knew nothing about Natalia Rivera (other than the fact that she existed) until I started watching the show again in January 2009. What I write about Olivia and Natalia in the here and now is based on a combination of things: 1) things I have observed in the Otalia storyline (dating back to October 2008) and 2) gut instinct. I have the ability to get inside these characters heads, and I think I can bring a perspective on what I think they would do/think because I’m a writer myself.

Your comments about painting this story with a detailed, sensual, emotional, and colorful description made me realize something yet again about my Otalia posts. I seem to be incorporating some of my storytelling style that I use for my novels with these Otalia posts. Of course, I realize that I have never written just a simple recap for the week in Otalia. However, based on what you and a couple of other readers have said, I re-read a few of my Otalia posts. I am definitely allowing my novel writing/storytelling side to show with these Otalia posts at times. This side of my writing abilities has been slipping into my Otalia posts; call it my own writing Easter eggs. To be honest, it isn’t purposeful; it’s accidental. I just write using my instincts and will continue to do so when it comes to these Otalia posts :)

  22. writetilt Says:

    Moonwish,

LOL. I still find it surprising and a bit amusing (in a good/positive way) that people anticipate these Otalia posts the way they do. I guess I’m still adjusting to the idea of having “fans” (so some of you have said) of my work. Nonetheless, I appreciate your compliments and am glad that you look forward to these Otalia posts.

It is very easy to be dedicated in sharing my writing abilities for Otalia. Jill Lorie Hurst, Ellen Wheeler, Jessica Leccia, and Crystal Chappell make it so with the awesome job they are doing. I want to spread the word on Otalia and put more positivity out there on the net about TV’s hottest couple. I want to help this show survive. It’s why I am so dedicated.

  23. writetilt Says:

    Redblaze18,

Thank you. I’m glad you enjoy how I write these Otalia posts, and I’m glad I can point out other hidden gems. Based on reader feedback, I have noticed that many go back and re-watch the Otalia scenes after I analyze certain scenes and point out certain details. It’s the most common feedback I see. I think it’s awesome though.

Agreed that family doesn’t just go away. I know Rafe hasn’t been out of prison long, and adjustment can take months. However, if he really wants to be alone, then maybe he should find a job and move out. Just sayin ;)

As I said in a previous post, I had a hard time with the production model for GL when I returned to the show. But it is endearing me every week. Agreed that there are some artistic shots that make me take notice that this show is not just a soap.

  24. writetilt Says:

    Denisebella,

Thank you so much. I’m glad you enjoyed this week’s post. Yes, I picked up on the hidden message of the shoe dialog the first time I saw that episode.

LOL. I’m glad you liked the title. As I said on Twitter, I had a feeling some of you would like the title (in addition to my new Otalia term, “frankenclipse”).

  25. JFaye Says:

I always look forward to reading your take on Otalia. I missed the Mrs. Hurst reference — wonder if it was because the actress playing the part was so painful to watch? One thing that struck me in the courtroom scene was Olivia’s exchange with Frank which I think was to show the audience that they are making their way back to being friends. When she thanks him for helping out, his eyes narrow, as if he can’t believe what she is saying because it is so out of character. Then, he watches the hug with Natalia. Then, when she says “you must love her very much to do this” he responds with “looks like I’m not the only one.”

To me, as annoying as Frank Cooper is at times, these scenes and the way he behaved afterward — turning down meals, telling Olivia and Emma no one had to go anywhere — show that he is not going to pursue Natalia any more and will end up being supportive of Otalia and I suspect, will help Rafe deal when he does find out.

  26. writetilt Says:

    JFaye,

    Thanks for enjoying the posts.

The Mrs. Hurst reference made me laugh. Like I said, it’s one of those “writing Easter eggs” that I picked out. Jill Lorie Hurst didn’t slip that one past me ;)

I agree with your assessment on Frank regarding Olivia. I didn’t write that in my post (due to length), but I did notice this change of behavior towards the end. I think he’s on his way to redemption in my eyes.
