Beacon of Light: Otalia Shines & Sizzles the Week of 04/20/09

Otalia: Olivia and Natalia

The April 13-April 17 episodes of the Guiding Light were emotionally jarring episodes that left me stunned for days. Seriously, I think I started to recover around Thursday of last week. Months of careful and great storytelling had finally built up to the Otalia love confession. From past experience of watching soaps, there is usually a down slide after the admission of love between characters. If you’re lucky enough to get a decent build up, the excitement level (for me) is not ever as high anymore. Some soap writers (today) forget to continue the romance that makes you stick with a couple, and once the “I love you” is out the way, it’s usually not as good. I had some slight concerns this would happen with Otalia this week, but my fears were relieved. In fact, I am downright optimistic after viewing the April 22-April 24 episodes with Otalia. Guiding Light’s writers were able to sustain my enthusiasm from the prior week and build my excitement for the future.

I must say that things started out a bit rough for Otalia the week of April 20. Olivia reverted to “hard boiled egg” mode when she saw Natalia for the first time after the non-wedding with Frank. I saw Olivia’s return to her old self as a way of fighting off her weakness for Natalia. I also felt that Olivia was trying to protect herself because I truly think Natalia has the power to hurt her the most. I understood this halfway through the April 22 episode as Olivia tried to make Natalia realize they could not work as a couple. Nonetheless, Olivia’s efforts came to a sudden crash when Natalia showed me some of that same fire from the April 17 episode. It was Natalia who set Olivia straight with a fiery and forceful response that put Olivia firmly in her place (something I absolutely loved). When it was over, Olivia was the one who was vulnerable and Natalia, the strong one. I loved how Natalia took control of the steering wheel in their relationship by making Olivia listen. Natalia had Olivia’s barriers crumbling like the walls of Jericho, and it was quite enjoyable to see just how much Natalia affects Olivia. Even as Natalia succeeded, Olivia made another attempt on the April 23 episode by pointing out that Natalia’s religion would still be an obstacle to them. When I watched Olivia make an unexpected move on Natalia, I felt she was testing her to see if she was truly ready to be involved. I wasn’t surprised by Natalia’s reaction considering her guilt for loving Olivia and her ties with her faith. Seeing the look of dejection on Olivia’s face got to me once again and made me feel sympathetic towards her. Still, Natalia’s quick rebound was a pleasing move as she tried to overcome her qualms and reach out to Olivia. I could see the hope return in Olivia’s face…until Frank interrupted them.

I know some viewers are annoyed with Frank Cooper because he’s an obstacle between Natalia and Olivia. I’m one of the people who is also annoyed by him, but that means Frank (Frank Dicopoulos) is doing his job well. We are suppose to be annoyed with Frank because it seems to be the writer’s intent. Writers adds plot obstacles for a couple because it makes it so much sweeter once they overcome the obstacles. So while I also wish Frank was out of the picture, as a writer, I understand his purpose. I would do the same and have done the same with the stories I write.

After Frank informed Natalia that Rafe had to leave for the halfway house, I enjoyed the church scenes. I loved watching Natalia continue to struggle with her faith vs. what Rafe would think about her and Olivia vs. her feelings for Olivia. You watched the struggle slowly evolve into comfort and peace as Natalia realized God still loves her, no matter who she loves. The peace and comfort was evident after Olivia and Emma showed up unexpectedly at the church. I felt that Natalia found some acceptance over acknowledging her feelings for Olivia out loud. As a viewer, I could feel the peace inside of Natalia when I watched her grip Olivia’s hand as they sat together in the church with Emma. Those scenes were calming and a stark contrast to the emotional highs of the April 13-April17 episodes. It was serene and just what I needed as a viewer.

One of the highlights of this week’s Guiding Light episodes was the dinner between Natalia, Olivia, and Emma. I could see that the peace and ease that Olivia and Natalia found in the church scenes transition into awkwardness at dinner. I feel awkwardness enters their circle because they knew this particular dinner was different than others. Even though they’ve had dinner as a family dozens of times, their confession of love had never been between them before. I loved how they both spoke openly about the awkwardness they were feeling and worked together to resort to normalcy in their conversations. The ease they’d found in the church returned along with laughter, which I must say was quite enjoyable to watch. In fact, I was chuckling right along with them. After the heavy duty emotions of angst, sadness, denial, and torture these two women endured for months, it was nice to finally see them laughing together again. I absolutely agreed with Emma’s remark when she said, “This is fun.”

It was also enjoyable watching Otalia relate (again) like they were a couple in their discussions, even though they aren’t…yet. Overall, I got the impression that what started out as an innocent dinner invitation (prompted by Emma) turn into an unexpected date. The knowing smiles and flirtatious looks of two people in love had been present all along. They were engrossed in each other and seemed to shut out everything going on around them, especially when Emma left them alone. None of the obstacles and fears that nearly kept them apart forever mattered as they enjoyed and drowned in each other’s company. Even as the chemistry shimmered between them during dinner, everything skyrocketed after Natalia insisted on driving Olivia home.

When Natalia walks Olivia to her hotel room, the low burning flame between them ignited with a dowsing of accelerant known as Olivia Spencer. From the moment Olivia crosses the threshold into her room, she ramps up her siren call by lighting the flames of desire and longing she feels for Natalia.  Everything about Olivia – her voice, her movements, her smile, the look in her eyes – is conveying that she wants Natalia. And Natalia is clearly aware of it as you can see her reacting to Olivia’s siren call. You can see Natalia trying to resist Olivia, yet she is sending out her own signals. It’s there in the expression of Natalia’s eyes as she accepts Olivia’s overt messages of desire and reciprocates with her own. Even as Olivia injects humor into their situation and the two share a laugh, nothing can taper down the heavy emotions, chemistry, and passion flowing between them. Still, Natalia finds just enough strength to resist Olivia when she explains that she wants them to be their normal selves with each other (for now). I could see a second or two of disappointment in Olivia’s eyes before acceptance takes place. While Olivia tells her she wants that as well, I could sense a double meaning in her words. To me, Olivia was conveying that she wants Natalia to go with her feelings. If “normal selves” means that whenever Natalia gives in and advances their relationship, then Olivia was more than willing to explore the next phase.

I want to touch on the hotel room room and the symbolism of what that represented to me. Olivia standing inside her room represents a new step forward in their relationship – one as a couple and eventually lovers. Natalia choosing to remain standing outside of the room represents her desire to keep things as normal as they can for now, even though she’s clearly tempted to cross over the threshold (literally). When Olivia touches Natalia’s hand over the door threshold, to me it symbolizes a compromise. Things would remain relatively “normal” as possible, but they had also taken another step forward towards a new direction. However, I definitely felt there was a moment where Olivia wanted to yank Natalia across that threshold and toss out everything they’d just agreed to do. I also felt that Natalia wanted it just as much as Olivia did. Again, they managed to resist before saying goodnight. I have to say that it was frustrating but in a good way as a soap fan. This is how I like my soap opera writing when it comes to relationships.

Overall, there were three things that resounded pretty strongly with me in the April 24 episode. First, it was interesting watching the role reversal between Natalia and Olivia. Natalia was the one who drove Olivia home and even walked her up to her hotel room. Since I’ve been watching them, I would have expected it to be the other way around. Watching Natalia in this role was a pleasant surprise, which I definitely enjoyed. Once again, the Guiding Light managed to shake up my expectations with Natalia by allowing her to take more of a leading and dominating role in her interactions with Olivia. I would like to see Natalia act more as an aggressor, and I’m starting to see more of that. I want just enough of that with Natalia but not to a point where it changes her character completely. So far, the Guiding Light is doing that right. I’m also hoping the Guiding Light continues to allow Natalia to chase Olivia. I noticed some of that with this week’s episodes and enjoyed that dynamic.

The second thing that struck me as startling was the softening nature of Olivia’s personality around Natalia, especially in the April 24 episode. Olivia has always been as razor sharp as a knife since I’ve been watching her. Now, she’s changing and becoming less sharp but definitely not a dull blade. I watched Olivia’s face radiate and light up like the sun after shutting the door behind Natalia. I had one thought while I watched that scene: what is Natalia doing to Olivia? To me, it’s clear that Olivia is (very) vulnerable to Natalia and putty in her hands. This is not a bad thing, believe me. Watching Olivia swoon for Natalia reinforced that this is the love she has been waiting for all her life. Again, I don’t have a long history with the character of Olivia, but I just have a gut instinct that no one has ever made her feel the way Natalia has. I expected the swooning to be on Natalia’s part for Olivia, not the other way around. Watching Olivia react the way she does for Natalia has been extremely enjoyable. I am loving the evolution of Olivia’s role in their relationship as well.

Third, I like how Olivia and Natalia don’t seem to know what comes next. Instead of bottling it up inside as they have done previously, they ask each other openly with questions like: “So, what’s next for us?” and “So what happens now? What happens next?” I have to give special kudos for the writers writing the dialogue for these two. The questions they ask each other seem like normal things two people in their situation would ask. There are no set of rules for them to go by, so they are trying to figure it along the way. The special care, attention, and realism to the writing of Otalia should be praised. It is a gold standard for other soaps and even prime time shows to follow.

I have to give special props to the writing, direction, editing, and music selected for the Otalia scenes. When I watch some soaps, I point out stuff that I would change if I was executive producer and head writer for the show. The only, tiny thing I can find fault with is that the show isn’t hiding Jessica Leccia’s pregnancy well. Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a single thing after what I saw with the Otalia scenes. The writing for these two characters continues to be excellent, and I loved how the scenes were edited together for the April 23 episode. I’m referring specifically to the scenes with Rafe, Natalia, and the priest in the church and the scenes of Olivia with Emma outside of Company. Finally, the music selections for the Otalia scenes have been some of the best on the show (since I’ve been watching), but Guiding Light outdid themselves with the April 24 episode. The songs were a perfect fit for their scenes. I appreciate the care and thought with their scenes. If the Guiding Light could just fix my tiny issue that I pointed out earlier, it would be perfect.

Last but certainly not least, I want to give another special acknowledgment of Jessica Leccia’s and Crystal Chappell’s performances. I’ve already explained how I felt when I watch these two in a prior post, but these two wonderful actresses hit a grand slam out of the stadium this week. Beautiful job, ladies. You both continue to bring the light in your performances. Keep it shining.

Otalia Highlights for the Week of April 20, 2009

  • I loved the role reversal of Olivia and Natalia where these characters are taking on stances I don’t expect. For me, it’s believable and quite enjoyable to watch. I am rarely surprised on soap operas anymore since many of them resort to recycling rather than writing.
  • The fun mother and daughter interaction between Olivia and Emma outside of Company brought a smile to my face. For me, the genuineness and fondness these two have for each other shined through.
  • I noticed the purple scarf that Natalia was wearing while eating dinner with Olivia. Otalia fans understand the significance of that.
  • The foreplay between Olivia and Natalia during dinner was superb and built up into a satisfying crescendo when they said goodnight to each other. Once again, I have to acknowledge the beautiful, beautiful job Jessica Leccia and Crystal Chappell did with those scenes.
  • Finally, everything about the hotel room scenes between Otalia was flawless, wonderful, and unbelievably hot. Seriously, I thought my screen was going to break out into a sweat with the heavy chemistry and passion flowing between Natalia and Olivia. I haven’t seen anything that hot between a couple in a very long time. Again, thank you Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia for going for it with no holds barred.

I really enjoyed reading this and yes the doorway scene was hot!

Amazing reviews! WOW! Thank you so much for that and I agree 99.9% with you. The only thing I kind of disagree with is the hiding of the babybump. That doesn’t bother me so much. It’s kind of like an inside joke at this point. I just ignore it and I’m happy they didn’t write the pregnancy into the storyline because that would have been way too cliche.

The April 24 episode was just absolute pure happiness to watch. I was grinning like a damn fool all day and carried that grin to the weekend. In fact, I’m still in a great mood because of it.

The writers on the show just keep surprising me in a positive way each and every new episode that they give us. I don’t know how they do it, but I thank and bow to them for doing it so well.

Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia are true talents and can convey so much by just standing next to each other. It’s unreal… half the time I fear they’re going to combust into flames and scorch my screen. Just brilliant!

I know there’s angst to come, it’s a soap opera after all, but this is the way to build a proper supercouple, this is the way to do it and GL is doing it right.

“When Natalia walks Olivia to her hotel room, the low burning flame between them ignited with a dowsing of accelerant known as Olivia Spencer.”

Another brilliant article!! and I love this quote!! Absolutely brilliant!! I was thinking the same thing!! Not sure how Natalia resisted, but it was a sweet moment as well as being hotter than the flames of Tartarus!!

This episode was perfection! Never seen anything like it! It was so nice to see some of the touching happy family scenes like we had back in the Farmhouse of Love!!! Its been far too long!!

Crystal and Jessica were so sweet in this episode! It was like a weight lifted off their hearts (and mine!) But, at the same time I was glad the sexual tension was ramped up off the charts!! No one can say Natalia doesn’t feel the same way now! She eyed that big ole bed with definite interest and seemed disappointed there was no kiss.

And as you point out, it marked a significant moment for Olivia when she didn’t get her feelings hurt by Natalia not coming in. In fact, she looked as giddy as a school girl! Olivia Spencer giddy? Who would have thunk? Only the love of her life could make her feel that way!! What a great ending to the week!!! Quite a turnaround from the last several!

And poor Frank, I think he is going to have a harder week next week. He has been driving me nuts as well, but after Friday, I am so happy I do not mind him at all now! I am in Otalia state of euphoria!!

Now bring on that kiss!!! No one can resist those green smoldering eyes forever!

  4. ahhiker Says:

Thank you for such a beautiful article! I agree with everything you said. This is the truest love story I have ever seen and I am loving it! I went back yesterday and reviewed YouTube clips of Gus’s death and Olivia’s heart transplant and you can see the new beginnings of a softer and more gentle and more compassionate Olivia. Natalia has had an amazing influence on Olivia from the very start. We waited a year for the week of April 13-17 and it was well worth the wait! Crystal Chappell has always been an incredible actress, but that week she was phenomenal! She gave the performance of a lifetime! And Jessica Leccia was outstanding as were the writers! I absolutely love everything about this storyline! I love the way Natalia is, and always has been, the strong one when Olivia falls apart! They are moving forward with their relationship and I think it is going to be just as enjoyable to watch as the last year was!

  5. Amanda Says:

That was a very interesting read. Thank you.

I particularly liked your analysis of the door scene. There was so much going on besides that which was verbalised. The gentle build up and Olivia ultimately glowing with delight was a pleasure to watch. For me the end of the scene also felt like a shared moment. They may have been on opposite sides of the door but the magnetism was still so apparent. When they each did that little exhale to relieve the tension I realised that I had been holding my own breath too.

It is hard to believe that in only a week these wonderful writers and actors have delivered us from broken hearts to cloud 9. I hope they are allowed to continue to play so successfully with our emotions for a long time to come.

  6. DocT Says:

Awesome article! You expressed my sentiments exactly! This is simply the best love story on television period. Crystal and Jessica have serious chemistry, and Ellen Wheeler and Jill Lorrie Hurst’s writing has been sublime. I cannot believe that Crystal and Jessica can do their scenes in one take – that is simply amazing and shows how talented they truly are. CC and JL both deserve Emmy’s for their performances!

It was so refreshing to see the playful banter between the two women and interacting with Emma, given all of the angst the past month. I loved how Nat put Liv in her place this week. I can’t stop rewatching the episodes from this week. From Liv not wanting to be touched by Nat, to reaching out and holding hands by the end of Friday’s episode was so satisfying. I love the fiesty Nat. Liv needs to know that she is the first choice and worth fighting for. And when Liv displayed that big smile at the end of 4/24 episode she realizes for the first time that she is somebody’s first choice.

As a soap fan, I long for the slow old-fashioned romance. The last time I couldn’t wait to watch a couple fall in love was Luke & Laura 30 years ago. I for one am eagerly anticipating how Liv and Nat are both going to try to woo each other. Otalia is a bona fide super couple and will transcend daytime much like Luke and Laura did 30 years ago.

Thank you Guiding Light for leading the way in storytelling again. I hope that GL finds a new home soon so we can see the progression of this love story. I will follow The Light wherever it goes!!

  7. tngolfergirl Says:

    Great review! Thanks so much.
I loved this week. I absolutely loved Natalia this week. JL totally rocked her scenes. And CC…brilliant as always. I loved how every reason Olivia threw at Natalia for them not to be together was shot down every time by Natalia. The last one being her religion. The Church scene…OMG…did you ever think we would see on daytime tv or any tv for that matter that scene…two women with their daughter sitting in a church reflecting on their love for one another in front of God? I love Guiding Light for this. Well done. And that’s all the proof Olivia needed to know that Natalia’s religion is not going to be an issue for them. WOW!…just WOW. I cannot wait to see this journey unfold. Ellen Wheeler and Jill Lorie Hurst…Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for this.

  8. Sonya Says:

Your analysis is fantastic. I enjoy your Otalia blogs immensely!

  9. Beth Says:

I really loved this article thank you! I can also see the change in Olivia the love she feels for Natalia as someone said she acts so giddy & her face just glows of love, it’s so beautiful! When she leaned against the door my heart melted…..love is an amazing thing it can make us strong, but yet so weak! I had to say I chuckled myself when they were having so much fun, I was like awww how sweet, these two are just so adorable, and Emma the little matchmaker that is so innocent. I love this family, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

  10. Mary Says:

You said it so eloquently. This is hands down the best love story and best written dramatic storyline on television right now. The chemistry between these two women is undeniable and I love watching them and their family.

  11. loganX2 Says:

Great article. I think we all needed the happiness of Friday’s episode, after last week. I know there is going to be angst(it’s a soap), but I cant take anymore angst like the wedding angst. More smiles, less tears. Jessica and Crystal are just amazing and the writing is just outstanding.

Thank you so very much for your comments! I would respond to each of your comments individually, but I’m afraid I’m a bit tired from all night writing sessions. I got a little sleep but not much. My brain just isn’t with it to write out responses to everyone right now; however, I read your comments and appreciate them very much. Thanks for enjoying the post!

  13. hefid Says:

Great article! brilliantly written..just like the otalia lovestory! i can’t wait to see where the EW and JLH take us next! CC & JL are portraying these two women beautifully!
Kudos to everyone involved in this lovestory and to you for writing such a wonderful article!

  14. suzysak Says:

Great analysis. It was so wonderful to see the girls happy. The wedding episodes totally knocked me dead, and to have this week end the way it did put me in a happy place. As others have said this is a soap so it won’t last long, but I can always replay the door scene!

Looking forward to your next article.

  15. Laurel67 Says:

I totally appreciated what you had to say, especially as to the recovery time from wedding week – it was only until today that I felt like I had come out of it; even with the happiness of Friday’s ep, the deep emotional swell of the previous weekend, hadn’t stopped rocking me. So it was so nice to be able to re-enter this past week, with a refreshed mind and a less achy heart and appreciate this next beat. I too was almost dreading seeing more distance being placed between them, but instead Natalia fighting back so forcefully and quickly (which made sense after April 17), was what we needed to get us back on course.
And the dinner scene (I know everyone loves the hotel scene and I won’t disagree with that), but to see them laugh and flirt and enjoy each other was truly the highlight of the ep for me – I so loved every minute of that and “pancakes!” ha,ha. These two are so made for each other that it hurts my eyes, but in a truly great way of course. And no the baby bump doesn’t bother me, I mean occasionally it just takes me out of the moment (maybe that’s the dislike), but I love that they’re not writing it in, and for that I’ll take every bad baby bump look in the world!

  16. susi Says:

Thank you for another very elocuent article about Otalia. You put it so well and I agree with everything you said. I can’t wait for what’s next for these two.

  17. Karyn Says:

Wonderful article, thank you. I appreciate that you were able to articulate how this exceptional storyline is a the result of so many ingredients perfectly blended…from the honest and caring writing and to the talent of CC and Jessica and their surreal chemistry, to the music and overall production. All come together to create a story I consider the best on T.V. day or night.

One comment on that hotel scene…WOW! I’m a straight woman who in 46 yrs has never thought about being with another women….but I have to tell you, if a woman looked at me the way Olivia looked at Natalia…with that much love, passion and intensity….well, I’d be batting for the other team at least for one night! Thanks CC for making my husband jealous!

  18. alliCarolinaGirl Says:

I loved your analysis of Otalia for this past week. It was such a sigh of relief to end on a happy note with both women smiling and falling deeper in love. Crystal described their relationship as ying yang; and the writers took that principle with contrasting the non-wedding week with this week. And can I just say I was thrilled with Jacqueline Tsirkin’s performances this week. Little Jellybean is the love glue and she is a little Olivia mini-me. And wasn’t it great to hear Crystal call her Jellybean off camera as they were leaving the church with Natalia LOL? The unexpected first date was perfect. I loved the humor with banana pancakes, ‘cuckoo’, etc. But it was the ‘goodnight’ scene that left my jaw dropped and the rest of my body melted in a puddle. I loved how Natalia did the role reversal and walked Olivia to the door. It was so romantic and such a lovely surprise. I feel like I am watching this ‘goodnight’ scene for the first time when I go back to replay it. The writers, Crystal, and Jessica are just that good. And the baby bump is not bothering me. Their chemistry is so intense that I forget about the bump. LOL

And I agree with you regarding the music. I truly appreciate the fact that GL supports independent artists versus generic, canned music. These artists (such as Gabriel Mann, Kyler England, Naimee Coleman, Aaron and Andrew, Tom Rhodes, etc) are gaining a great fan base among Otalia fans.

I can’t wait to see what happens next. Again, I enjoyed reading your blog!!

  19. Debbie Says:

Thank you for your wonderful article on Otalia. Again, you have eloquently and artistically painted the Otalia episodes for last week. You are seeing the same brilliant love story as all of the fans, but you have a way of describing it so beautifully. We love Otalia and we want it and GL to continue. I think with special people like yourself and the all of the other media that are getting on the Otalia train, we will be seeing this show for another 72 years. Of course it helps that the writing and the acting and the wonderfully talented people associated with this show are so dedicated and proficient at their craft. In other words, they are damn good at what they do, and they are passionate and committed, as you are. Thank you again. Please keep giving us these extremely enjoyable articles, We heart you!

Thank you all! I’m glad you enjoyed this week’s post. Writing it was definitely a bit of joy and pain for me. When I say that, I mean the joy and pain I went through to write it. I woke up at about 2:30 a.m. (or so) Saturday night to study the Otalia scenes for this week (even though I watched every day). I studied and began to scribble out some notes for a post. I stayed up until well into the afternoon on Saturday trying to write it and flush it out just right. It was joyful to watch the scenes again while writing it, but I was in a bit of pain with the lack of sleep. I couldn’t stop until I got this post together; then I was able to crash. I ached like Olivia and Natalia ache but in a very different way. LOL. So thank you very much for your comments. I suffered a bit, but Otalia and the Guiding Light was so worth it!

  21. Rita Says:

This is one of the best written reviews that I’ve read. Thank you. I have to say that you are probably one of the lucky ones if you started to recover late last week. It’s Sunday here, and I’m still not over the events leading up to the wedding. We all knew that they were finally going to admit their feelings for each other, but I was still amazed at the manner in which it was done. The writing for this storyline has been absolutely flawless. I know what you meant about it maybe being a bit of anti-climax once they had told each other how they felt, but I wasn’t worried about that happening here, as the writers have taken so much care of this love story, that I knew that it would only continue to get better, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

I loved how Natalia stopped Olivia in her tracks…as Olivia previously said to Bill how Natalia gets her….and Natalia definitely wasn’t going to let Olivia revert to her old self. We’ve been waiting and wanting Natalia to finally speak up, and boy did she do it but in words and by actions this week. By the time they were all seated in the church holding hands, you could see that huge walll that Olivia had put up, had come crumbling down.

I loved the awkwardness of the dinner and then the laughter and the discussion of day to day things that followed. The writers haven’t missed a beat when it comes to moving this storyline along. And how lovely was it that they finally had some uninterrupted time together.

As for end of the scene….I love the way Natalia looks past Olivia intially at the bed. And as smouldering looks, well nobody does it better than Crystal Chappell. I think the times Natalia looked towards the ground, is because she couldn’t cope with the intensity of those looks. The looks, the hand holding told us all what we needed to know…and that is that they are both beginning to see each other in a sexual way. And yes, it was lovely to see that it was Natalia walking Olivia to her room. And whilst I just think of it, can I just say how hot I thought Crystal was in that suit!!

And I couldn’t agree more about the music selection for the Otalia storyline, they’ve gotten it right every time in my book.

I also agree with you about your comment about Frank…he is role is pivotal
and the fact that we do hate him says he’s doing his job right!

As for their inability to hide Jessica’s pregnancy…personally it hasn’t bothered me in the least, because the writing and the acting has been that good.

Kudos to the writers, the producers, and finally the immense talents of Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia. And I’m so looking forward to the next beat of the storyline.

  22. riot Says:

    Hey again!

Let me apologize for my fellow Big Purple Posters. I told them please, this time don’t word your comments in such an eloquent and detailed way, you’ll only inspire the poor tired soul to stay up all night again and produce another one of these masterpieces. But it’s hopeless, I just can’t get them to leave it at: “Aaaaahhhh, i lubz Otalia!!!”

    Again, I’m sorry. ;)

  23. writetilt Says:

    Riot,

Your comment made me chuckle out loud. No worries about the Big Purple Posters. I really enjoy what they have to say, so I want them to keep it coming. Plus, I was already mentally preparing to write another post just in case I saw something brilliant this week, which I did. I’ve been losing sleep this past week anyway because of my own novel writing, so I’m getting use to being in zombie mode. ;) It hurts a bit but it’s worth it. Otalia and the Guiding Light is inspiring me with my own writing. I feel like I should return the favor by taking some time to write about them and the great things this show is doing.

No need to apologize. I love the Otalia peeps :)

    Great article, very well put.
I continue to be amazed be this story, just when I think it can’t get any better, the actors and writers step it up another notch. It’s an emotional, but very worthwhile journey…

Still fanning myself after rewatching the doorway scene…

But I love how you point out the utter realism of these scenes. It’s resonating with me so strongly because I’ve HAD the awkward “uh, what now?” conversations. I’ve WANTED to cross that threshold with someone who also wanted to, but we took our time before doing so.

And I adore that you mention how there’s usually a drop in intensity or even interest after a couple has declared their love for each other… and we’re not seeing that here at all. If anything, everything’s been stepped up a notch. I was a little worried, to be honest. Would they back-burner Otalia a bit? I hadn’t realized they’re SERIOUS about showing us the progression of this relationship. I mean, I had hoped they would, but I wasn’t going to hold my breath.

I’m starting to feel comfortable with the GL writers now and am starting to learn what to expect. Now that I’ve seen Natalia with a backbone and with direction in these pre-relationship days, I have nothing but high hopes and big purple dreams for these two!

    Thanks for your post! <3

Another great analysis. Please keep this coming. I can’t get the look on Olivia’s face when she says ‘Latte’ out of my mind. These two actresses have such great chemistry. I loved the way they were both nervous around each other…Natalia in the beginning of the dinner till Olivia said the ‘beefy’ comment but just before they got up to pay the bill, Natalia openly gazes at Olivia making Olivia nervous. I thought they played the whole scene very well!

  28. marcia Says:

love this. I just can’t wait to see what happen between those two. crystal and jessica are doing should an amazing jot with this storyline. I am so glad they and the writers are so commited to do the storyline right and not just use it as a ratings getter.
    GO OTALIA!!!

I feel your pain about lack of sleep!! I was up until 11:30 and up again at 5 because I couldn’t stop thinking about them! I had to go online and I found this great article to post on..

I was relieved my post wasn’t complete gibberish, but to be able to produce the exquisitely crafted piece you created with little sleep is a testament to your genius!!

If you could see me, I am giving you a standing ovation!! Bravo!!!

look forward to the next installment!!! rest up!!

  31. writetilt Says:

    BBK,

Why, thank you so much! Once again, I’m feeling very humbled by everyone’s comments about the post. I’m a bit surprised this post turned out as well as it did, too. I think it could be better with more polish if I had more sleep. :) However, I’m a perfectionist, so I always feel that I can do better with my writing, even when I’ve had the proper amount of sleep all week. I always say to myself that I will try harder the next time. Seriously. ;)

Definitely resting up by sleeping off and on all day. No writing for me at all today, other than some Twitter or responding to comments here (when I can). When I’m conscious, I’m just cuddling up to my netbook to catch up on other soaps (Y&R, B&B) I’m behind on. Unfortunately, nothing else compares to Guiding Light right now.

  32. NpG Says:

First time visitor and wow, most excellent analysis.

    Thank you.

  33. PinkRomeo Says:

Great review…this story is so well written (and acted), I have been in a perpetual state of awe since Feb. when I started watching after a long absence. Otalia is the return of the old fashioned soap romance…you just got to love that.

  34. CherGL Says:

A lot of very nice insights in an observant and brilliant review. The writers, everyone involved in this story line, are telling this with great care, realism, intelligence, and chemistry. I agree, when was the last time a couple said good night at the door, with the bed in the hotel room in view and all they did was hold hands and give each other flirty, longing looks but STILL have such chemistry, and passion ooze from the scene? Just incredible!!

  35. Ceridwyn2 Says:

Wow. A wonderful article. Well written and explored.
    Thank you!

You’re right, the past few months have been an emotional roller coaster, that there’s a payoff coming that will be sweet. And while it won’t be empty of angst, it’s all towards making them the best supercouple daytime has ever seen.

  36. Toya Says:

I really enjoyed your perspective on Otalia. I’ve watched Olivia off and on over the years since she left Days. Phillip is probably the only 1 who challenged her more until Natalia just brought on a whole new level. I don’t know how she was able 2 resist that come in my room look but Natalia put it back on her and said when its time look.

I don’t know how long this is going 2 last b/c of some comments I read on BPD, I’m a little discourage but hopefully fan support will continue make this 1 of the classic Love stories. Its not about 2 women but the Love they share between them.

Now I’m about 2 watch all 2 episodes again 4 the 3rd time this weekend, can’t get enough of Otalia. I will save this page 4 future review of Otalia episodes.

  37. tamelle Says:

Fantastic article! You covered all of the bases, and I couldn’t agree with you more! Otalia has me staying up late on BPD, seeking out articles, tuning in daily, watching (and rewatching) clips from the show, chatting, reading fanfiction … seriously, I have never been affected in this manner by a television show. The smoldering affair between Olivia and Natalia is like nothing I have seen before … the writing, the acting … *sigh* Both the story line and your article get a hearty thumbs up from me!

  43. buggy Says:

Thank you for the detailed analysis of the April 24 episode of Guiding Light; you are spot on, especially in regards to how the writers are taking great care to develop this supercouple’s relationship.

I can’t fault them much for JL’s pregnancy coverup–with their budget and limitations, I’m surprised they get to cover the very evident bump at all.

Finally, the chemistry between these two actors is simply the icing on the proverbial cake when there are two excellent actors in the middle of this storyline. It was one hell of a hot scene!

    Thanks again,

    buggy

  44. D28IF Says:

Very nice analysis for the week. Quite frankly, if someone had missed seeing it, they could feel as if they were there by reading your column. And I like that you acknowledge Frank’s part in it. Frustrating as he may be, he serves a purpose. The writers aren’t creating waste so Frank is there for a reason and you explain that.

I think your tiny complaint is kind of cute – hiding Jessica’s bump. Sometimes they try and sometimes they don’t. I know for some people it ruins the illusion. To me it’s gotten too big it’s just something I can suspend my sense of reality and ignore it, get into the scene being played out. I mean, even when she’s in a huge winter coat and her son has to lean over something in that coat to hug her goodbye, you know something’s up. It can be as distracting playing, “let’s see how they hide the pregnancy” as it is to just let it go and enjoy a scene.

I’m in complete agreement with you in loving the evolution of Olivia. It’s a pleasure watching her change, grow as her love for Natalia has taken a hold of her. And she’s allowed it to, as well. She has definitely never been in love nor been loved the way she is with Nat. You nailed that.

I’ve been repeating the same thing as you did here – “It is a gold standard for other soaps and even prime time shows to follow.” You probably worded it much better than I, though.

    Great job!

  45. Jen Says:

Excellent summary and analysis of Otalia’s budding relationship! I love the idea of Natalia taking a more aggressive role in her relationship with Olivia–I think it’s the kind of thing that is unexpected based on their public personalities, but does happen sometimes. Even if, in the long term, Olivia is the more “alpha” personality, I think it’s important that Natalia take that role right now. In general, I’ve got nothing but love for the whole storyline. The decisions made by the writing team have been excellent, and the acting has been flawless. It was lovely to see Olivia as happy and content as I’ve ever seen her…and Natalia was happier and more secure than she’s been in a long while, if ever. This storyline not only stands up to repeated re-watching, it seems to get better every time. I can’t wait to see their relationship progress further.

  46. Stacey Says:

Great article! I love the Olivia and Natalia storyline! <3

  47. Carol Says:

Thanks for your continued thoughts on Otalia!

This stage of the game is so compelling. I swear I’m as nervous a wreck FOR them, as they seem to be with each other. I’m empathizing with the whole butterflies and nerves stage – it seems very real. I loved the little touches that show they’re aware of navigating new waters (Like their hyper-awareness of the double meanings of “Are you two together?” or “Why aren’t you holding hands?” Nothing is as simple anymore. No matter how hard they try, this new aspect of their relationship keeps jumping to the forefront. I’m confident they’ll adjust tho. ;) )

And ITA agree that seeing Nat take the lead, and show some of that spine we knew she was hiding was one of the great highlights of this week.

Look forward to your further thoughts!

I was so thrilled to see this gorgeous response to Otalia’s first day on the Springfield stage. Your eloquently captured the many nuanced layers of the scenes, crossing the threshold…. etc. I looking forward to your analysis of this weeks scenes if for no other reason than I will get to experience them all again…. throught the eyes of someone who is equally fanatical about dissecting the brilliant writing and acting unfolding on screen!

I am waiting with baited breath and Xanax for the continued maturation of this budding romance. As the Otalia train chugs its way up the hills and races down the valleys of its self discovery, it is a comfort to be sharing the ride with so many wonderful friends!

    Thanks again!

I know I’ve already commented on this, but I thought I’d add something.
I think many of us are ‘suffering’ from Otalia-itis. It’s symptoms include insomnia related to repeated viewing of clips and detailed analysis (or even un-detailed analysis over Olivia in jeans), procrastination, avoidance of RL responsibilities (at times), leaving phone calls to go to voicemail while the show is airing (or otherwise free).

Your analysis of this storyline in the blogs you’ve written this far have been articulate and a joy to read. Keep up the wonderful work.

  57. writetilt Says:

    Ceridwyn2,

Hmmm “Otalia-itis.” Oh so that’s what this condition is called. I think I definitely suffer the symptoms.

Thank you for enjoying the blog posts. They are a labor of love, but it’s a joy to write about Otalia :)

  58. Ali Says:

I’m so glad someone brought up your blog. I found it entirely enjoyable. You have some really great ideas and interpretations of the story. Made me think a bit more about some of it and I enjoyed experiencing it all over again. Please keep up your writing but do try to get some rest as hopefully there will be many more super Otalia scenes to come ;-)

  59. writetilt Says:

    Ali,

Thank you very much. I think I can bring a different view in how I interpret the Otalia story line because I am a writer. I understand character, dialog, and story in a very deep way. I live in that world, and it helps that I have an analytical-thinking mind. I use all of that to interpret what I see and lay it out for everyone else to read here. I’m glad that people enjoy my points of view. It makes all of the effort I put into these Otalia posts worth it.

As for rest, well…I have just come to live with the fact that I don’t get as much as I use to. LOL. It’s not just Otalia that’s keeping me up late but my own novel writing as well. I am use to lack of sleep. On Fridays, I’m use to not getting anything but a couple of hours because I’m wrapped up in Otalia footage and writing my weekly posts. However, it’s a labor of love that I truly enjoy. I suffer a bit, but I love what I’m doing :)

  60. wolfpup Says:

I also thought that about the hotel scene. Great article.

  62. Coach Irish Says:

Writetilt, your recaps are so amazing, of course you have some very good stuff to work with. I love how you caught the changing of the characters, the see sawing of the “agressor” role. I too think that is great writing. Everyone expects Olivia to be the strong one in the relationship so seeing her melt into little puddles around Natalia is unexpected yet brilliant. Same with Nat, to see her get a spine and let Olivia know how things are is perfect.

I do not think this storyline would ever have grown into what it is had any other two actresses been given the task. Crystal and Jessica ARE Otalia. Their chemistry is incredible and believable and they play well off of each other. This is an amazing love story, superbly written by Jill Hurst and Ellen Wheeler and beautifully portrayed by Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia. They all deserve congratulations for the care they have taken with the storyline.

  63. writetilt Says:

    Coach Irish,

Thank you so very much! And yes, you are right that I have good stuff to work with for Otalia.

I agree that there are multiple combinations of greatness that makes the Otalia story line bloody fantastic. Jill Lorie Hurst, Ellen Wheeler, Jessica Leccia, and Crystal Chappell have been giving it their all with the writing and acting. All of this, along with the valiant efforts of the crew, goes hand in hand. I see and truly appreciate how hard the Guiding Light is working. I notice and I pay attention. I applaud them for their efforts. Great job!

Jessica’s pregnancy breaks the forth wall for me, but in a good way. It demands that as a viewer, I have to acknowledge my participation in this drama. I am asked to participate on an invested level. As a viewer, this extra effort and investment has only amplified my engagement.

On a historic level, I realize that this storyline is groundbreaking for women and families with two mom’s. For me Jessica’s pregnancy is the perfect meta compliment to this storyline about the many different struggles that families and women face. It helps remind me every time I watch, that this is only a tiny storyline on this canceled soap opera, filled with dedicated people wanting to tell a simple but great love story. It would be so fitting that a well told love story between two women saved this show. After all this is a female driven genre and this particular show was even created by a women. If this is the end, this is such a fitting way to go out.

Now I am off to watch that door way scene again, with you insights in mind. Great article.
